On March 11th Imizamo Yethu experienced the worst fire in Cape Town's history with approximately 4 500 structures razed and approximately 15 000 residents affected. Three of the young men I have worked with through Ikasi Youth lost their family homes. Just as these young men matriculated from high school this past December they now find themselves with no foundation to begin their adult lives. I am aiming to sell off my Township Textures Exhibition (Lutge Galley, 2014) to financially contribute to them re-establishing their lives. 100% of the proceeds will be split evenly amongst these young men to serve their individual needs.
The Township Texture Collection depicts original images taken on an iPhone 4s in the communities of Langa and Imizamo Yethu. The title of the images give the GPS coordinates of where the image was taken, the majority of which no longer exist as is the ever changing nature of Township communities. The majority of the textures captured of homes in Langa have been torn down and replaced with new apartment blocks. The majority of the Imizamo Yethu textures were captured in the Zola section of the community which has experienced multiple fires in the past few years and these homes do not remain.
